If you’ve ever watched a film and thought “I’d love to do that”, this is your moment!


A free 6-month filmmaking programme funded by the National Lottery Community Fund is launching at Hack Oldham — this is a unique opportunity to learn hands-on filmmaking from an award-winning professional filmmaker.


This isn’t theory or watching tutorials online. These are in-person classes with industry-level equipment, real productions, and guidance from someone who works in the industry.


 We are offering up to 20 people the chance to learn real filmmaking from industry professionals,


And it’s all completely free!



Learn Filmmaking the Real Way


Film school can cost thousands of pounds. Many people never get the chance to go. This programme brings film-school level practical experience directly to the community, giving adults the opportunity to learn the craft of filmmaking in a supportive and welcoming environment.


Over six months you’ll work with other participants to create two short films:


🎬 A practice film where you learn the basics

🎬 A final short film produced which will even be submitted to international film festivals.


Along the way you’ll gain hands-on experience with:

  • Cameras, lighting and sound equipment

  • Directing and storytelling

  • Script development

  • Film production planning

  • Editing and post-production

  • Working as part of a real film crew

You won’t just learn about filmmaking — you’ll actually do it.


Participants will receive hands-on tuition from a filmmaker with real film industry credits, alongside guest speakers from the film and TV industry.


That means you’ll gain practical insights into how films are really made, not just the theory.

Filmmaking is about more than just technical equipment. It’s about collaboration, creativity and communication.

Travel Costs Covered


We want this opportunity to be accessible to everyone. That’s why travel support is provided, helping cover the cost of getting to weekly sessions for all participants!


Get Creative in the Makerspace


Participants will also take part in prop-making workshops using recycled wood and donated materials in the Hack Oldham makerspace. You’ll design and build props for your films while learning practical creative skills — all while promoting sustainable, low-waste filmmaking.




See Your Film on the Big Screen


At the end of the programme, the films will be shown at a community screening event.

Friends, family and local residents will come together to watch your work and celebrate the achievements of the participants.


And with your final film being submitted to international festivals, you can get real movie industry credits. In fact your work could reach audiences far beyond Oldham.


Who Can Join?


This programme is open to:

✔ Adults aged 18+

✔ Anyone curious about filmmaking

✔ Places are limited to 20 people


No previous experience is necessary. All you need is curiosity, enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved.
